Iris (revisited)
A Senseless Act of Food Porn

11/29/04

The term carnal is a powerful word, often used to express one’s sexual appetite. When defining carnal, you'll notice words such as appetite, sensual and body – terms we often use to describe food.

Carnal (Car-nal) adj
1. relating to somebody’s physical needs or appetites, especially as contrasted with spiritual or intellectual qualities (formal)
2. sensual or sexual
3. relating to or consisting of the body (formal)

Sexy Free Form Ravioli at Iris
Sitting back musing over my favorite restaurants and dishes of 2004, I can’t help but jot down some notes on this year’s sexy dishes. Yes, I keep a secret list of sexy dishes – I’m no prude.

Some of you (mainly those prudes who haven’t even considered keeping such a list) might be asking yourselves, “What constitutes a sexy dish?” Well, that’s entirely up to you. After all, when it comes to the business of stiffening your cucumber – you know best.

But do know that sexy dishes are defined by texture and presentation. And when you actually think about it, it’s amazing just how much food and sex really have in common. Each satisfies an appetite, and equally makes us lust for that exhilarating ‘afterwards’ cigarette. Also, when it comes to both food and sex – the more sensual and passionate the better.

Lately, when I’m in the mood, I head straight to Iris for the Free Form Ravioli. It’s more than just a flirtatious little number. The name itself (free form) insinuates something more, characterizing its sensual unrestrained attitude. Bathing in a shallow but gentle pool of frothy bubbles – the delicate pasta’s smooth exposed skin sweats, nearly quivering as it passionately presses against the halibut’s firm, succulent flesh.

Capturing the true sexual essence of human nature. Two exuberant forces battle each other to absolute harmony – the dishes masculine side wants to speed up to a climax in the heat of the moment while its softer, more feminine side longs – wanting more. It excites and rouses my inner feral – a senseless act of food porn right there on my plate. Frankly, I’m shocked the religious right hasn’t found a way to ban this dish from all bedrooms... and restaurants.

Satisfied, I find myself mesmerized by a flickering candle's flame that sits just beyond the bulb of my slowly swirling pinot noir.

Melanie… she leans over to the table next us and asks, “can you spare a cigarette?”
