Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ
Get your loco moco on

Week: Mon. July 24th, 2006

Have you ever looked at the nutritional labeling on a can of Spam? If the world’s population were to eat a single serving a day – two thin slices – the fear of overpopulating our earth would be a concern of the past. It contains extremely high levels of saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol.

In Hawaii Spam is as common as Fried Chicken here in the deep South. I will never understand Hawaii’s love affair with canned ham. According to the Honolulu Star Hawaiian’s consume an alarming 7 million cans of Spam per year. That’s an average of 6 cans per native.

Even I am scared of Spam and I’ll eat just about anything. So, when I eat at Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ – Atlanta’s first and only Hawaiian plate lunch restaurant – I stay clear of all menu items containing those thin slices of canned ham. I prefer Kalua Pork – a salty, smoky pork shoulder butt served like all plates here, with two scoops of rice and bland macaroni salad.

Or, when I feel my arteries can withstand a little stiffening I’ll get my Loco Moco on. It’s two hamburger patties wearing an egg each topped with thick, tasteless gravy.

I find the menu here to be hit and miss – the BBQ Short Ribs are usually tough with a distinct road kill flavor and the spicy pork tends to be a little too sweet for my taste. But I’m certain I like it more than the Spam Ramen Noodle soup, which I couldn't eat as a starving college student.

The bottom line, stick with the Kalua Pork and when you want something a little gut busting go ahead and get your Loco Moco on.
