Pillowy, warm beignets at Voila

Beignets, for whatever reason, aren’t easy to come by in our bourgeoning food city. People enjoy them and even actively seek them out, but the search can be a problematic task — they are tough to find even in Cajun restaurants.

Decatur’s Voila breaks the mold by serving these square doughy pillows showered with powdered sugar. But this isn’t the only menu item that will leave you wondering why you haven’t yet stopped in to give Voila a try. The gumbo arrives with a brilliantly rich brown broth and the shrimp po-boy is surprisingly delicious, served on ciabatta bread — yes, I can feel you authentic sticklers cringe as I type this.

Jambalaya is loaded with spicy andouille sausage and thick — I mean, really thick — cubes of chicken. I prefer shredded chicken with this dish because cubes tend to be on the bland side, unable to soak up the heady flavors that make jambalaya, well, jambalaya.

For dessert, a gingerbread brownie will bring you to your knees with its decadence and simplicity.

What took me so long?
