Vito Goldberg's
The son of Sam serves up a killer pie

Week: Thur. November 3rd 2006

Set a Jew and an Italian loose in the kitchen together and somewhere in the aftermath is going to be a kick-ass meal. And that’s what happened many years ago when two drinking buddies (Vito Pelligrini and Sammy Goldberg) decided to open a neighborhood pizza joint in the Bronx, NY.

Today, Vito Goldberg’s, located on Whitlock Avenue in Marietta, GA., is owned by the son of Sam, Larry Preston. Though Preston earnestly proclaims he is the son of Sam, he looks more like a Vito — take my word for it.

The only thing I know for certain is that he prepares a killer pie cooked in a stone oven. He tops it with an amazingly fresh sauce that arrives with a slight kick — the best I’ve tasted in recent memory. And despite his off-the-beaten-path location, he doesn’t budge when it comes to quality — cheese is Grande, the dough is hand tossed, and sausage is from Fontanini.

It doesn’t stop there — juicy meatballs are housemade with a mixture of ground beef and pork. There’s absolutely nothing more disappointing than a straight up beef meatball.

All great pizza joints serve a mean calzone and Vito Goldberg’s is no exception — the feathery Grande ricotta is superior.

I won’t pretend to know how Sammy Goldberg’s son became a Preston, nor will I pretend to know why he chose Marietta for this pizza joint, but I do know one thing — the son of Sam serves up a killer pie.
