Taurus
Simple well-executed desserts served with a view

Week: Thurs June 1st, 2006

Like craft beer, the art of pastry is sorely under appreciated in this “chocolate cake & crème brulee” town. Why? I honestly don’t know. It’s somewhat of a mystery to me, really. I am one of the few who actually appreciates the skill and effort that goes into preparing that mysteriously underrated last course of the night.

So it’s exciting to stumble across a pastry chef like Chris Hagearty who unquestionably has what it takes to be something truly special. His desserts are simple and straightforward yet flavorful and well executed.

His Panna Cotta is a perfect example of well-executed simplicity. Just a simple panna cotta, really, but Hagaerty’s version is consistently silky, not gummy like so many others in town. Despite being the best item to EVER walk out of Taurus’ kitchen, the panna cotta strangely didn’t even make the summer menu. However, not all is lost, Hagearty informs me that he will run it as a special here and there.

The Million Dollar Pound Cake with vanilla ice cream, a dessert Hagearty dearly dedicates to his mother who recently passed away, currently hails as Taurus’ best menu item. The highly addictive blueberry compote brings it all together.

Hagearty will occasionally take a chance or two. Take the Warm Chocolate Pine Nut Tart – a bitter sweet chocolate tart laced with pine nuts is flanked by a puckery passion fruit sorbet, rice krispies and caramel sauce.

Where to begin? The caramel plays well with both the rice krispies and the chocolate tart, but the passion fruit sorbet rivals, and eventually overpowers the chocolate tart. It’s still fun, I’ve ordered it five times.

The view overlooking Peachtree Street from the patio is the only thing that rivals Chris Hagearty’s $4 desserts. Noise travels outward not up making for a peaceful and somewhat romantic experience with a nice dessert wine.

It's the perfect way to end a memorable evening.
