Midtowns Westside is undergoing a major resurgence these days thanks in large to the mammoth Atlantic Station project. The spill over can be felt as far away as Howell Mill and South Atlanta Road.
Howell Mill Rd, south of Bacchanalia, has been an industrial wasteland for as long as I can remember. But now, new condo communities have erected from abandoned warehouses and with these new hip, urban living communities have come restaurants such as The Real Chow Baby and the newly opened Slice Pizza.
Slice Pizza closed their location in Hapeville to grab this slot on Howell Mill. They serve NY style pizza, subs and calzones to an eclectic crowd. At one table three Georgia Tech students in shorts and flip-flops cant keep their eyes from fondling a young twenty-something business gal dressed in high heels, a tight black skirt and low cut blouse.
One table over from them two grimy blue-collar workers from the warehouse a block away do the same while tackling a tidy but well constructed calzone filled with a zesty mix of mozzarella and ricotta rife with Italian herbs and spices.
Next to me, two businessmen tuck their ties into their shirts so that they can get sloppy with a toasty meatball sub and chicken parmesan sandwich.
On the far side of the room, three young riff-raff hoodlums with glazed eyeballs and bizarre hairdos pounce and devour a sixteen-inch thin-ish crispy pizza. That hottie couldve been butt-naked and those three wouldnt have noticed.
Is this pizza worth a special trip? No. But I like it for the crispy pizza and diverse crowd.
Also, its a worthy addition to a part of town desperately in need of good eats
