Ship & Anchor
Week: Thur. July 14th

Have you ever wondered why fried chicken automatically tastes better in the deep south? Or ponder the fact that any Reuben sandwich served outside of New York City is sure to be branded as no better than second-rate?

Personally, I don’t eat fried chicken when in the big apple, but I do occasionally eat Reubens here in the south. And despite what they say, I have managed some good luck. Or perhaps, my palate just isn’t refined enough to distinguish between the haves and have-nots, when it comes to a Reuben.

But I do know what I like, and Ship & Anchor has one of the better Reubens in this city, in my opinion. Between two slices of perfectly grilled rye, you’ll find lean, thinly sliced house cooked corned beef topped with sauerkraut, thousand-island dressing and melted Swiss cheese. My only complaint, though minor, is that I’d like to see more of a heaping pile of that tangy, corned beef and perhaps a little more of a personal touch with the dressing, which tastes awfully Sysco-like and a bit ordinary. But priced at $7.95, side of fries included, who’s complaining?

Besides a solid beer selection, this one room dark-wooded Alehouse mainly offers hearty, gut busting grub such as Iris Stew ($9.95), tender filet tips braised in a rich Guinness and mushroom sauce with potatoes and veggies. Also, Shepard’s Pie ($8.95), Cottage Pie ($9.95) and Meatloaf ($8.95) from a flavorful blend of Italian sausage and ground beef will help expand the waistline.

Obviously, not for those maintaining a watchful eye on their girl-ish figure. Rather, for those who prefer to belly up to the bar, literally, and flaunt a body by Boddington's.

Now, back to that question of -- why do Reubens taste better in New York? Well, I have one idea as to why. I think it's the bread, which performs better in the unique chemistry of the exceedingly humid Manhattan air.
