I moved to Atlanta in 1974. During my 33-year marriage to our fair city, Ive witnessed tremendous growth, especially with our citys gastro offerings. Until recently, not even a decent New York style slice could be found, Chinese food was only sweet and sour something, and the elusive Philly cheesesteak could only be tasted in your cherished memories of those glorious grubbing days in the city of brotherly love.
Today, all is well in the ATL. Bellas Pizzeria is responsible for carving a path for respectable New York pizza, a mad chef at Mariettas electrifying Tasty China has single handedly changed the way we think about Chinese cuisine, and now, Philly Boys brings back all those chow-happy memories of squishy Amoroso rolls filled with small pieces of chopped steak and onions tossed with cheese.
Speaking of cheese, its widely known that politics and religion are banned from bars as acceptable topics of discussion, but whatever you do, never, ever, start the debate on a foodie discussion board about which cheese should come on a real Philly cheesesteak. Ive had my nose hairs and eyebrows singed for lesser offenses.
A proper Philly Cheesesteak, like the one served here at Philly Boys, located on Howell Mill Road, is made with real meat, fresh not frozen, and cooked on a grill using grease.
As it cooks, it is chopped to bits. You then choose your cheese (White American, Provolone, or Whiz) and whether or not you want onions, peppers or mushrooms.
Finally, it rests in a soft Amoroso roll dripping its juices with each and every bite. If this doesnt sound healthy to you, then you should probably exit this site right now... and don't ever look back.
Ill take mine with provolone, please!
