Pangaea
A tiny gem among the corporate giants

Week: Thurs June 22nd, 2006

Lately, casual cheap eat restaurants have been slow to open inside the perimeter. Many believe, myself included, that skyrocketing rents are to blame. It seems the faceless corporate types (and Bob Amick) are the only ones who can afford to be in the game these days. Is this some sort of penance for my sins of gluttony?

Whatever you choose to call it, it’s becoming extremely difficult, if not impossible, to find an ITP Pick of The Week as a result. So, I’ve decided to take this opportunity to re-stomp on old grounds rather than seek out the next new suburban hot spot.

Pangaea, located over in Midtown’s warehouse-y Westside, is certainly worth rehashing, if not for the Lemongrass Pork Sandwich (Banh Mi) alone. The meat undergoes high-temperature grilling which lends a resilient, irresistible smoky flavor that also works particularly well with the salad (Saigon Salad) and cold noodle bowl (bun) versions.

The popular Banh Mi is hard to pass up, but the Mediterranean Tuna is worthy of your attention. It’s a “no-mayo” tuna salad comprised of freshly grilled tuna, lively capers and basil pesto.

Sitting in the corner shamelessly stuffing my face, I am suddenly comforted by the fact that this unique little eatery is doing brisk business despite rising rents and the ominous threat of corporate siege.

Hopefully, others will see that it can work and decide to follow suit. If not, I will go broke at the gas pump.
