A popular saying among self-proclaimed chili purists is “If you know beans about chili, you know chili ain’t got no beans.” In many cases a chili will be disqualified from an official chili cook-off if it contains fillers such as macaroni, rice, hominy, and–you guessed it– beans.

You won’t find beans in the chili at Never Enough Thyme, a bustling Alpharetta eatery popular with the well-to-do soccer mom set. Instead, small stewy cubes of sirloin arrive in a bold beefy broth wrapped by a light oily layer of singe. The rich flavor of beef is distinct.

Pointing to the mostly empty bowl in front of me, a group of savvy soccer moms at the next table agree, “That’s the best chili I’ve ever eaten.” While it’s not the best chili I’ve ever eaten, I will agree with the minivan Mafia that it’s the best chili I’ve had in Atlanta.

Spicy Texas-style chili

If chili isn’t your thing, the meatball sub is as good a meatball sub as you’ll find in these parts and pastas are handmade.

The Thomas Keller-signed French Laundry menu hanging on the wall for all to see is a dead giveaway that this isn’t your average Alpharetta lunch stop.
