The Manchester Arms
Fish & chips steeped in local history...

Week: Thur. February 9th

Sitting at the bar, I take another bite of what very well could be this city’s best fish & chips while I think about how cool it really is to see your (our readers) recommendations continue to pile in. This week’s pick is credited to Bob Ellis the copious owner of Especially For You in College Park. If you’ve recently stumbled upon a new favorite cheap-eats spot that you’d like to pimp – simply shoot me an email (tom@atlantacuisine.com).

“This place has the character of pubs back home.” A scrawny fellow with a genuine English accent announces as he takes a seat at the bar and orders a Strongbow Cider.

“Thank you, I did most of the work myself.” A heavily accented English voice unexpectedly responds from behind the bar.

Sitting at my lonely side of the bar, I admire the cod's magnificent crispy coating and stark white flaky flesh while eavesdropping on these two homesick souls reminiscing about favorite hometown pubs and UK’s popular Bulmers Cider.

On a previous visit I enjoyed Shepherd’s Pie, which is sort of like ground beef stew laced with carrots, celery and onions covered with a heaping mound of slightly buttery, baked mashed potatoes. But we found the meatloaf with bacon and cheese to be a bit of a snoozer. Skimpy on the bacon and where’s the cheese?

With the food being mostly favorable, my major complaint here is with the humdrum beer selection. Wake up! – the beer laws changed eighteen months ago. A Thomas Hardy’s Ale with my fish & chips would be nice.

What does it take to get an English pub in this town to finally recognize the better beers?

For you history buffs, College Park was a planned community originally established in 1890 as the city of Manchester. Also, this cozy little home was the long time law office of Judge Barnes who was tragically shot and killed in last year’s highly publicized courthouse has shooting.

Hard to believe I’m sitting here eating fish & chips and drinking a Boddington’s.
