It takes a lot to surprise me in my old age, but when I stumbled upon one of the citys best Cuban sandwiches while eating at a pizza joint in Austell I was, well, a little shocked.

Arrive Hungry!: the enormous Cuban sandwich at Lil' Louie's
|
Not only is it one of the most remarkably tasting Cuban sandwiches Ive eaten, it has the intimidating girth of a thick wooden paddle. Just one half of this enormous sandwich is larger than a human head and requires a firm two-handed grip to secure. The whole sandwich tips the scales at a bulky 1.25 pounds. Thinly shaved succulent pork is roasted in-house by owner Louie Hernandez, a gregarious, high-strung Cuban from Miami, and brilliantly pressed with a mushy layer of ham croquettes.
Hows the za?
Though not the best pizza in town, Louie does put out a solid pie. Unquestionably, in this part of town, its going to be the pizzeria sign outside that lures them in. But in the end, it will be the Cuban sandwich that wins their hearts and stomachs.
Oh, the key lime pie is an absolute must. |
