La Brasa Grille
Cal Vulcan does it again

Week: Thur. August 10th, 2006

After eating my way through a few recently opened ITP restaurants, I once again find myself marching up 400 in search of a worthy Pick of The Week. Economically speaking, this is a devastating haul I am forced to make all too often. But, the high-rent districts of our inner perimeter have sadly out-priced the little guy and I am unfortunately, left with no choice.

Blazing a trail up 400 North with another deadline hot on my heels, the pressure now rests on the trusty shoulders of Cal Vulcan — a real lady-killer — and the topside’s most celebrated grubber.

He claims the Cuban sandwich at the quirky La Brasa Grille in Roswell to be among this city’s best. And when Cal touts a Cuban sandwich it’s worth a drive from anywhere in the city. While I agree that it’s a pretty darn good sandwich, it’s definitely not the best in the city. Fuego, Kool Korners and Havana being the big three. I give Fuego the edge, though a bit pricey.

What La Brasa does best is a dish called Parilla Argentina — a meat platter served on a thick black skillet. Ribs, chicken, pork, beef and sausage (including blood sausage) are marinated for three days and then grilled to order.

A small plate of Arepas con Pollo — two corn pancakes filled with small bits of chicken and cheese — arrives piping hot. A perfect example of just how good the food really is.

La Brasa’s only problem is that it can’t decide whether it wants to be a restaurant, sports bar or nightclub. So it tries to be everything to everybody. In the middle of the room there is an enclosed dance floor in the shape of a partial octagon. I imagine a steel cage with two bloodied bodies barbarically beating the shit out of each other with their bare fists.

I say dump the dance floor and create an atmosphere that feeds off the passion of the kitchen.

But no matter what they decide, AlphaRoswellians should pack this place before it is too late.
