Remember when the Atkins diet infected our society? Breads, pastas, and anything stick-to-your-ribs delicious instantly became taboo. Thankfully, those days are long behind us and heartier cuisines (such as Italian) are on the comeback.
Pizzeria Fortunato is the latest of a new trend of Pizza/Italian restaurants to poke a finger in the eye of the late Dr. Atkins. You are immediately greeted by a display of gust-busting strombolis, stuffed pizzas and chicken parmigiana rolls.
Though, the pizza at Fortunato's is good (possibly a top 5 in the city), it isnt the strength of the menu at this restaurant that boasts, Real pizza made by real Italians.
The real star of the show is a crispy Calzone Friti, which is deep-fried until golden brown. Think oversized fried wonton fisted with house made ricotta cheese, melted mozzarella and your favorite toppings.
Meatballs are constructed of ground beef, veal and pork the way they should be prepared. Pan-fried provolone arrives bubbling in a sizzling black skillet doused with olive oil it, alone, is worth the drive to Smyrna.
It appears Mario over at Bellas finally has a little competition. No worries big man, when it comes down to the pizza you take it.
Though, I will be getting my calzone fix at Fortunatos. And, I dont really care what that crazy Dr. Atkins and his disciples have to say about it.
