Pizzeria Fortunato
Solidifies Smryna as a stronghold for pizza and calzones

Week: Thur. August 17th, 2006

Remember when the Atkins diet infected our society? Breads, pastas, and anything stick-to-your-ribs delicious instantly became taboo. Thankfully, those days are long behind us and heartier cuisines (such as Italian) are on the comeback.

Pizzeria Fortunato is the latest of a new trend of Pizza/Italian restaurants to poke a finger in the eye of the late Dr. Atkins. You are immediately greeted by a display of gust-busting strombolis, stuffed pizzas and chicken parmigiana rolls.

Though, the pizza at Fortunato's is good (possibly a top 5 in the city), it isn’t the strength of the menu at this restaurant that boasts, “Real pizza made by real Italians.”

The real star of the show is a crispy Calzone Friti, which is deep-fried until golden brown. Think oversized fried wonton fisted with house made ricotta cheese, melted mozzarella and your favorite toppings.

Meatballs are constructed of ground beef, veal and pork – the way they should be prepared. Pan-fried provolone arrives bubbling in a sizzling black skillet doused with olive oil – it, alone, is worth the drive to Smyrna.

It appears Mario over at Bella’s finally has a little competition. No worries big man, when it comes down to the pizza – you take it.

Though, I will be getting my calzone fix at Fortunato’s. And, I don’t really care what that crazy Dr. Atkins and his disciples have to say about it.
