Week: Thur. February 16th
There certainly isnt a dearth of quirky, oddball eateries in this city. Its what I like most about our dining scene. These obscure places keep things interesting and are often where the most delicious morsels are to be discovered. And who doesnt appreciate a great food find?
But these hidden gems arent easily stumbled upon. It requires teamwork and selflessness. A big part of why Ive asked the assistance of you our viewers and am happy to report that I havent been the slightest bit disappointed by your recs.
This weeks Pick is the end result of an email I received from one of our readers, Aaron Lipson (aka awl), who highly recommends the pork sandwich and cinnamon doughnuts at Ducks Cosmic Kitchen in Decatur. DCK is located on the backside of the strip with Figo in Decatur and looks more like a shoebox on stilts than a storefront serving bakery and bistro fare.
Those who are there for dine-in are quickly whisked across the courtyard into another building and sat in an odd room, which is only partially enclosed by exterior walls. The other half is one large snaking makeshift curtain divider.
If you suddenly get the bizarre feeling that you are sitting in an awkward back room of a church, well, you are. The dining room is actually located in the rear of All Souls Fellowship Church. But dont let that stop you from ordering a high gravity beer off the menu. DCK proudly offers Saison Dupont, La Chouffe and Highland Gaelic Ale.
By way of the kitchen, DCK serves up tasty pizzas on hand tossed dough. The style is more towards what Mellow Mushroom has coined to be southern a slightly thick, doughy crust.

Sandwiches are approachable and only constructed with DCK's very own fresh baked breads. The James Calvin, pulled pot roast with a smattering of mild horseradish sauce and tangy Dijon mustard, is served on grainy Walnut Leek bread.
Meanwhile, the Bistro Pork with smoked provolone and banana peppers arrives on slightly chewy, almost nutty baguette it's damn near perfection
In case you haven't noticed, Duck's Cosmic Kitchen specializes in baked goods, including sweets. DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT leave without grabbing a Cinnamon Doughnut to go. Texturally more like coffee cake it's amazing in the morning. Might even serve as a reminder that you really were sitting in a church last night drinking a Saison Dupont?
