The Café at Woodfire Grill
Week: Thur. June 23rd

Under the tightening grip of our wounded economy, many local top tier restaurants are finding creative ways to lower menu prices. Iris has resorted to a small plates menu Monday through Thursday, Restaurant Eugene is reportedly offering a casual, less expensive patio menu and Woodfire Grill has transformed the front bar area into what they are now calling The Café at Woodfire Grill, where all menu items are priced between four and twelve dollars.

Immediately upon entry you will notice a difference. Candlelit café style tables now fill space along the front walls and windows. The bar has been extended to make room for tempting displays of artisan cured meats, gourmet salads, jars of marinating olives and a spit-polished shiny red
Berkel slicer.

Inside the display case you’ll find pleasantly stringy Basque tuna salad, roasted red peppers, spicy chickpea salad and assorted meats brought in by Franco Boeri, former owner of Salumeria Taggiasca.

Tuohy offers three pizzas on the café menu; we experimented by ordering one topped with chorizo, peppers, manchego cheese, cilantro and chile oil. Possibly the best pizza I’ve ever eaten, certainly the best I’ve had in recent memory.

Before getting it on with Franco’s meat assortments, do an order of wood-roasted clams bathing in herb butter broth – you won’t be sorry. And if you’re feeling hydrated enough – try Tuohy’s salty sausage. Be forewarned – it’s house-cured and one bite will instantly suck every ounce of liquid out of your body, turning your tongue into sandpaper. But so worth the fourteen glasses of water it requires.

Also, I’m told that Jonathan St. Hilaire will soon be adding café style desserts to the menu, uncomplicated offerings for takeout and dine-in.

Even Greg Koetting, Woodfire Grill’s clever wine director, has jumped into the act with an imaginative yet inexpensive list.

Who knows, maybe this vision will lead to a Tuohy-style café and retail outlet to your neighborhood? For now, I’m content in knowing that it’s located close enough to be considered my ‘hood.
