Week: Thur.
September 8th
Every once in a while Im just not in the mood to dine out.
I dont care to analyze another stinkin sauce or deconstruct
(in my mind or on note pad) the flavors I believe a chef was
attempting to achieve and whether or not he or she achieved them.
Every once in a while I just want to park my rear in the Belgian
bar upstairs at Brick Store Pub in Decatur. I dont bother
to even glance at their food menu anymore; Ive been burned
too many times before. Besides, its well known this place
isnt about food. Here, its all about the beer. And
sometimes, thats a refreshing change of pace for me.
During these dog days of summer Ive been finding the time
(every once in a while) to indulge in a three-course beer dinner
of sorts. I almost always start with the local Terrapin All American
Imperial Pilsner. Despite the fact that its a pretty big
beer (8% abv), its remarkably light and truly a bargain
priced at $4.50 a pint. This cloudy-gold colored earthy pilsner
has plenty of hop character with a complex spiciness that I want
after a long hot summer day.
However, if Im feeling a bit sassy, I might start with
the frothy headed Saison Dupont.
But no matter what I choose to indulge for my second course,
which varies widely depending on the day and what they have available,
Im usually just making my way to dessert (3rd course).
Dessert this summer, in the absence of St. Bernardus ABT 12,
is Gulden Draak (10.5% abv). The Draak pours an effervescent
mahogany, its caramel aroma contains the slight hint of hayish hops
but isnt overly sweet as the alcohol nicely balances. Watch
out with this one, its an aggressive but delicious Belgian
ale. |
