Oddly, during Fourth of July festivities, we grill hamburgers and hot dogs in the backyard, or eat barbecue. When I think of Fourth of July, cities rich in American Independence history like Boston and Philadelphia come to mind, so I can’t help but think lobster rolls and cheesesteak sandwiches.
Lately, I’ve been getting my lobster roll fix on weekends at Once Upon a Cake (5165 Atlanta Hwy. Suite 210, Alpharetta Tel: 770.654.9757) directly across from Midway Meal House on Highway 9 in AlphaForsyth. Yes, it’s a cake house, but a guy by the name Fred Lord sets up shop most Saturday and Sunday afternoons to sell the freshest, most delicious lobster rolls I’ve eaten in the Atlanta metro. He flies the lobster in from Boston on Friday and sells them all weekend long at the cakery.
It’s nothing fancy, just walk up to the makeshift counter plopped in the middle of the dining area and get yourself a warm, buttery, hard-to-come-by — in Atlanta, anyway — lobster roll. This little treat will only set you back $4.55 and adequately fills a longtime culinary void. And, you can grab a dozen cupcakes to go while you’re there.
