Gettin’ My Grub On at Cajun Johns

After my Just Loaf’n po’boy article last week, a Marietta reader pointed me to a small dive po’boy shack called Cajun Johns (1175 Powder Springs Rd, Marietta Tel: 770.499.8700).

It’s located in the back of a gas station convenient store. There’s no tables—just pull up to the small box-shaped structure, park, order at the window, and receive a po’boy larger than your steering wheel for just $8. This mammoth sandwich (seen below undressed) requires two hands for proper handling.

The bread is slightly crusty with enough chewy to grip the crispy, spicy battered shrimp with each bite.

Eat it on the hood of your car.

I attempted to order other Cajun items off the menu like gumbo, etouffee, and boudin balls. “We don’t got those things today.” A gruff faceless voice from behind the window explained.

No mention of hours on the modest—to say the least—structure, or online.

While at the mysterious window placing my order, I couldn’t see through the glass for some unexplained reason unless I was looking downward through the sliding screen at a man’s hands.

Couldn’t see inside to the voice speaking to me, nor could I make out the condition of the interior of the building—and that’s probably just as well.

And honestly, I don’t care what shape the kitchen is in—just keep them killer po’boys comin’!

Rockfish, yes, and I like it. I’ve also had a good experience with the crawfish at The Crawfish Shack. I prefer the po’boy at Cajun Johns.

I’m from New Orleans, and this is a ‘we never close” poboy !!!! (ONLY a New Orleanian would know what I’m talking about)…BEST find TOM…So, where is the best gumbo in the Vinings area?

Tom, Have you tried the seafood gumbo from Creole Nouvelle (123 Luckie St. Atlanta,GA 30303)? I was craving gumbo and a friend bought me the seafood and chicken gumbo. I was very impressed with the seafood but the chicken gumbo was awful !!! I do plan on visiting so I’ll keep you posted.

Hi 504 Queen. Sorry for the delay in my response.

No, I haven’t tried the seafood gumbo at Creole Nouvelle but I plan to soon based on your report. Please keep me posted.

Good gumbo in Vinings? Hmmm, that’s a tough one. Really good gumbo isn’t easy to come by around here. I really enjoyed the versions at Beyond The Bayou (RIP) and Gregg’s at Redfish (RIP).

Perhaps a whole article dedicated to gumbo is in order.

    Tom,
Please come to a brewery tour and sample our fine beers. It is unfortunate you did not like our Winter Brew but I would love the opportunity to share our other brews as well.
