Antico Pizza Napoletana

Sorry for the delay in getting this article out, but I decided to give Antico Pizza Napoletana (1093 Hemphill Avenue, Atlanta, 404.724.2333) one last-minute try before I described the pizza to be anything less than super human, and have sauce slung in my face by the restaurant’s fanatical following.
The restaurant enjoys one foot washing after another on Yelp where it received 34 five-star reviews of its first 35. One brave soul was stingy with his stars, only giving the pizza a 4-star write-up.
Is this just a bad case of people will be sheeple? Possibly, but I really don’t think so. Honestly, I’m not sure what it is, but I do know that I’m one of the few who isn’t sold by the foodie stampede on Hemphill.
I’ll dish out some stars for bright sauce and toppings, but the pizza’s crust on all seven visits was consistently too thick, especially along the outer rim, too chewy, and far too doughy for my taste, think bubble gum.
My idea of perfect crust is one that effortlessly balances crispy and chewy with each bite — a quality I’ve yet to experience at APN.
Are the people here nice? Sure.
Is the space cool? Certainly.
And that’s fine and dandy for those who put too much into people and the quirky spaces they occupy.
Me, I’m only here for the food, and the pizza at APN is just ordinary.

My experience at APN SUCKED! The crust was so gooey the slice fell apart when handled. I don’t care for Varasano’s either. Vingenzo’s in Woodstock RULES!!!!!! Fantastic crispy crust topped with fresh mozzarella made in house. ‘Nuff said!
