Two Bitchin’ Bagels Way OTP

Last year I wrote a review about BB’s Bagels and Diner (770 Mcfarland Pkwy, Alpharetta Tell: 770.475.1818) that appeared in Atlanta Cuisine paper version, and mentioned that I make the hellish journey twice a month, just for bagels.
In the weeks that followed, my email box (I know, I’m old fashioned) jammed up with messages from giddy displaced New Yorkers who finally ended their search for a real New York quality, boiled and baked bagel.
In case you were wondering, yes, I still make the drive from West Midtown at least twice a month. I’m getting killed at the gas pump.
Now there’s good news for those living in the John’s Creek area. About six months ago, Essex Bagels and Deli (11030 Medlock Bridge Rd., Suite 160, Tel: 770.476.8214) opened its doors. Rumor has it they purchase their dough from BB’s, and judging from the taste, that could very well be true. Thank northside’s most prolific eater, Cal Vulcan, for the tip.
The bagels at Essex are a little larger — the size of a freakishly large human head — but every bit as shiny and chewy as BB’s.
All in all, I give a slight edge to BB’s if you’re looking for the absolute best, but if I lived in John’s Creek area, I’d probably never make the long drive to northern Alpharetta.
Too bad we ITP’ers don’t have a bagel anywhere close to the caliber of these two bagel joints. Until then, I’ll still make the drive to BB’s most weekends.
