L’Thai West

Eating a good bowl of curry is like slipping into that old Saturday morning sweatshirt. It’s comforting and familiar.

Some of you have been asking where I’m eating curries these days. To answer your question, I frequent a few places for Thai curries but lately I’ve been pointing people to the ethereal panang at L’Thai West (4500 West Village Place, Smynings, 770.434.4344).

This made-from-scratch, mildly spicy panang is very much like that rugged Saturday morning sweatshirt — but with a refined sense of perfection. As if someone has gone to soul-searching lengths to break down this rich sauce over and over again in his or her head and on the pan, honing the flavors and textures until reaching that moment of true ecstasy, that ends with an effortless yet complex spicy, basily, minty finish.

I also recommend pad thai and crispy and basil duck, the latter being one of the ten best dishes you’ll eat in Atlanta, in my opinion.

The décor here is sleek with lots of red and straight black wood. A waterfall is topped with a mysterious back lit deep red sphere that’s knda’ cool in a lava lamp sort of way.

This quirky restaurant seems to operate with the same passionate mission as the original L’Thai in Tucker. That mission: to save the world through chemical-free food and craft beer. Seriously, you won’t find a better beer selection at any other Thai restaurant in the city.
