Don’t forget Hot Wok

If there were a “forgotten soul” award for restaurants Hot Wok (6277 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Doraville, 770.936.8880) would be busy clearing window space for another accolade. Nearly a decade ago this Indo Chinese restaurant racked up one raving review after another. But today, it seems as if nobody knows it exists. It’s a shame because the food is still as good as ever.
I’m happy to report that the scary empty Friday’s Plaza shopping center has received a long overdue face-lift, and now has “coming soon” banners beginning to pop up over doorways. Hopefully this new flurry of activity will spill over to Hot Wok’s dining room.
I have an unexplainable connection with this restaurant, its people, and its fiery fare. I return regularly for shrimp pakoras, a gaggle of hand-forged chickpea flour hushpuppies rife with coriander, onion and chili peppers, served with a heady dipping sauce in a giant boat-like vessel.
Other dishes range from good to excellent. I recommend dry shrimp Manchurian, though it can be a little oily sometimes. And you can’t go wrong with an order of haka noodles or paneer.
Even though business has tapered off over the years, the food quality has not.
Oh, be sure to grab a perky fresh masala soda to go. That’ll wake you up for the drive home.
